This exercise is brought to you by Seth Godin.

Imagine a Double Tree hotel.

Picture the outside, the entrance, the breakfast buffet, the hallways, the rooms, the gym.

Now picture a Hilton.

Now picture a Marriot.

If I swapped the names on the building, could you even tell the difference?

Now imagine Nike built a hotel.

Imagine the outside, the entrance, the breakfast buffet, the hallways, the rooms, the gym.

You are picturing something completely unique and different.

Even if the Nike symbol weren’t slapped all over the building you might walk around this hotel and say to yourself, “is this hotel built by Nike?”

Hilton, Marriot and Double Tree have no soul. No expression. They stand for nothing.

They are simply a product.

If you need a place to sleep while you’re out of town, sleep here.

That’s it.

That’s why they all get lumped into a site like Kayak.com and people hunt for the best price.

What Nike has done so well over the years is never talking about the work (shoes), but rather about who they are and what they stand for.

Scroll through your last 10 posts and asks yourself:

  • Do I only ever talk about my work?
  • Do I make a stand for who I am?
  • Does my content have soul?
  • If another person stole my content, would anybody notice?

Of course it’s difficult to fully express the depth of your work when you only talk about the work.

The work has no soul without YOU.

If you don’t want to get lumped into kayak.com with the rest of your industry, I gotta ask...

Who are you?

If you to travel for 3 months, do you only pack gym clothes and leave the button downs at home?

When the first snow hits this winter, will we find you shredding down the mountain or cozied up with a romance novel?

Can your audience answer this question for you?

If not, then you don’t have a brand.

A brand is not your work.

A brand resonates life force and soul.

A brand is a vibe and the people know it. They feel it!

A brand means that people could pay anyone for this work, but they have to pay you.

When you create content that feels boring and bland everyone can feel that. That feeling is the brand your building.

When you create content that feels like an art project you want to share with your extended family on Thanksgiving, that's when you begin building a beloved brand.

If you want to learn how to build a brand that builds a true community on social media which leads to increased engagement and conversion take these next two steps:

With love,

Matt

Become a masterful storyteller and build a deep connection with yourself and your audience I went on a three day bender watching Dave Matthews Band at the Gorge Amphitheater for Labor Day Weekend. LABOR DAVE!! Right before I left I told my community about the mastermind that I’m launching and the current community they’re in will be phased out. The current community investment is $297/quarter ($99/mo). My hope was to offer heart-centered leaders the support they need to create content and a...

Create content that reflects the depth of your work and build a beloved brand that changes the world This took me 3 min and 11 sec to read Let’s say I achieve my goal of becoming a 5.0 tennis player (top 2% of all USTA ranked tennis players) Now, I am beating most people I play, which is so fun. People are impressed with me. The world sees me as a hard working, talented man which makes me highly attractive and desirable. I have achieved my most desirable goal and the world recognizes it. That...

Become a masterful storyteller and build a deep connection with yourself and your audience This took me 5 min and 19 sec to read I promised an update on the an outline of the StoryGrowth cohort mastermind launching this fall (also a general framework that would support you regardless if you join the cohort), but it’s feeling rushed so I’m going to take a bit more time. Instead, let me share with you a very clear pattern I am recognizing this year with my clients, the legacy builders. To be...
