If I was Marlin from Finding Nemo and I wanted to become an online coach, here are the stories I would make content about that would lead to sales.

All great businesses exist to solve a problem and then get known for solving that problem.

So what problem does Marlin solve?

let’s look at his story…

BTW, real quick… if you haven’t signed up for my 7-day free Storytelling course, click here and I’ll send you day 1 RIGHT NOW!

So, Marlin loses his wife to the open seas which is a huge trauma that causes him to lose trust in others.

You can see at the beginning of the movie he doesn’t trust Nemo to be out on his own. He is super overbearing which is creates a disconnection in his relationship with his son.

Once Nemo goes missing, Marlin sets off on his healing journey.

Throughout the movie he has to battle with trusting others:

  • trust the hungry sharks
  • trust the hippy turtles
  • trust big beaked pelican
  • and of course, trust Dori

While trusting these other characters in his life wasn’t easy, he did end up trusting them and good things happened after he trusted them.

It’s only when looking back in your story can you see all the pieces that line up.

“Wow, I trust all those people and because of it, I found and saved my son!”

At the end of the movie we watch Nemo sprint back to his dad to give him and giant hug.

Then Marlin says, “Now go have an adventure,” which shows us, Marlin trusts his son.

It’s clear, this trust is what has transformed this beautiful relationship with his son.

The problem Marlin’s business solves is having a poor relationship with your kids.

The cause of this problem is a lack of trust is their kids. In fact, these parents probably don’t trust most people the same way Marlin didn’t.

Instead of convincing his audience they don’t trust the world, he will just tell his stories and allow them to relate (or not relate).

If you don’t relate to his experiences then that’s fine. You wouldn’t buy his product anyway.

To make effective short form content Marlin doesn’t need to tell his whole story all in one video, he doesn’t have 90 minutes on Instagram.

If he did it would be something like, “My wife died, then my son got kidnapped, then I made a friends with chick who had 10 second memory… god was that frustrating… then I befriend a few sharks, met a 150 year old turtle, jumped in a pelican’s mouth, all to save my son and return home safely.”

What a terrible story with zero emotion or relatability.

Unfortunately, that’s what you’re doing with your stories. Trying to jam too much into too little time.

Instead, it would be far more effective for Marlin to pick ONE moment where he learned his lesson.

Like the Pelican. He had doubts and fears about this pelican, but he jumped into it’s mouth anyway and it got him in the door of that doctors office.

Now that’s a story he could actually tell effectively in 2 minutes without having to rush through it.

Then next week he can tell the story of trusting the sharks and the positive outcome that came from that.

Then the week after that he can tell the story of the turtles.

All of these stories he can tie back to how building trust in others built a deeper relationship with his son.

Marlin’s audience and ideal client is a younger version of him.

Overtime, story after story, they will see themselves in him through all these different scenarios.

Certain stories will resonate more with some people than others, but the more he talks about trusting himself, the more he becomes known as the “trust yourself” guy.

Then when it comes time for Marlin to launch his course, “Confident Self Trust Mastery” his audience will be chomping at the bit 🎣

This is the power of storytelling and how it leads to deeper trust and more sales.

I love Marty Neumeier’s definition of branding which is that a brand is not a color, logo or typeface. Branding is a gut feeling. 5 years ago I used to be inspired by Tesla. It was my dream car.
